The Finer Recliner is a northwest micro company located on beautiful, rural Vashon Island, Washington, a short ferry ride west from Seattle. In addition to being a local cycling destination, Vashon is also home to the bike in the tree, a local legend made famous by Berkey Breathed's well-known childrens' tale, Red Ranger Came Calling.
Our products are assembled here on the island. About 98% of our products' components are created and manufactured in the US.
I build the CURVE neck rests and side mount kits; John, a master fabricator and also an islander, welds the tube towers and side mount arms; Sandi, at Bergen and Company, embroiders the covers north of here in Bellingham; Zubin, a clothing designer and former islander, sews the embroiders covers in her shop in San Francisco; Lam's crew at Sea Sewing in nearby Kent sews the unembroidered covers; the Model 1 brackets are fabricated by Andrew at BBC and anodized by Pat at Terracycle, both in Portland; Pat also fabricates our Model 3 custom clamps; Bob at American Excelsior in Wisconsin cuts all our memory foam; Kerry at Irongate Machine in Bellingham makes our quick release spacers; Todd and Chuck at Sound Mfg in Kent vacuum form our bases; and all our hardware, aluminum tube and fabric are purchased locally.
As for the remaining 2%, the 60mm mountain bike stems we use for Model 2 bases are made in Taiwan. I cannot find comparable quality stems at a decent price made in the US. The ones we use are rock-solid, high quality, nicely finished and a fantastic price value we can pass along to our customers. Finally, because we live on an island just about everyone we work with is across the water. Jason, who with his design crew, digitizes all our embroidery images so Sandi's machines can read them, is a bit further away across the water. They are in Fujian, China. We have worked together for years and our relationship, which has been entirely by email, is one of the marvels and gifts of the digital age.
